Natural and managed soil structure: On the fragile scaffolding for soil functioning

چکیده
Soil structure in natural systems is a product of complex interactions between biological activity, climate and soil minerals that promote aggregation accumulation biopores. In arable lands, the management often requires mechanical fragmentation hardened to improve seedbed, control weeds bury plant residue. Despite difficulties defining quantifying structure, its critical role evidenced by loss productivity when perturbed (e.g. compaction) long history tillage agriculture. To overcome persistent ambiguities among scientific disciplines regarding definition function we propose framework for distinguishing managed based on their different formation processes functions. Natural preserves ecological order legacy promotes biopore reuse, stabilizes foodwebs protects organic carbon (SOC). The contribution net primary lands forming makes it useful (surrogate) metric structure. benefits crops are quantified indirectly via comparisons with no-till farming under similar conditions. levels trends SOC metrics status systematic consideration state using suitable prerequisite rational decisions related land ensuring sustainable functioning fragile central resource such as soil.

Soil Microbial Communities in Natural and Managed Cloud Montane Forests
Forest management often results in changes in soil microbial communities. To understand how forest management can change microbial communities, we studied soil microbial abundance and community structure in a natural Chamaecyparis (NCP) forest, a disturbed Chamaecyparis (DCP) forest, a secondary (regenerated) Chamaecyparis (SCP) forest and a secondary (reforested) Cryptomeria (SCD) forest. We a...
متن کاملSoil Structure Interaction Effects on Hysteretic Energy Demand for Stiffness Degrading Systems Built on Flexible Soil Sites
This paper aims to study the influence of soil-structure interaction on plastic energy demand spectra directly derived from the energy-balance equations of soil-shallow-foundation structure with respect to an ensemble of far-field strong ground motions obtained from Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) database and recorded on alluvium soil. The superstructure is modeled as a single-d...
متن کاملA critical review on structure-soil-structure interaction
The purpose of this paper is to review computational methods in structure-soil-structure interaction. As a result of globalization, buildings are located close to each other. This issue happens especially in big cities, making the study of structure-soil-structure interaction as an essential part of structural design process. The effect of soil medium, on which the building structure stands, es...
متن کاملPhylogenetic structure of soil bacterial communities predicts ecosystem functioning.
Quantifying diversity with phylogeny-informed metrics helps understand the effects of diversity on ecosystem functioning (EF). The sign of these effects remains controversial because phylogenetic diversity and taxonomic identity may interactively influence EF. Positive relationships, traditionally attributed to complementarity effects, seem unimportant in natural soil bacterial communities. Neg...
متن کاملSoft Soil Seismic Design Spectra Including Soil-structure Interaction
Design spectrum is known as an essential tool in earthquake engineering for calculation of maximum (design) responses in a structural system. Soil-structure interaction (SSI), as a phenomenon of coupling of responses of a structure and its underlying soil, was explored after introduction of design spectra and has not been taken into account in developing a design spectrum traditionally. To cons...
